Adjusting to life 2:31 am |
He's finally here! After 14 hours of labor Beckett Ryan Foye entered the world at 2:31 am on July 26th, 2010. He weighed 8 Lbs 8 oz and was 20 1/2 inches long.
We first went to the hospital at 8 am on Sunday thinking Courtney's water broke. Even though contractions were every 3-4 minutes, they sent us home to labor on our own since things were progressing slowly. We checked back in around 3:30 pm with very strong, regular contractions. Since we weren't planning on an epidural, we got to walk around the hospital (with minimal progress made), labor in the tub for 2 hours (again, minimal progress) and finally had to get the pitocin started. The midwife finally broke the water to lead to 2 more hours of minimal progress. Had we been laboring with the doctors from the group, we would have been in a C-section. Beckett's head was still pretty high up, and Courtney was officially termed a "disfunctional labor." Aaron finally suggested a position from the Bradley method... this was the key! After about 6 hours to go 2 centimeters, this new position got from 7 - 10cm in two hours! Then we pushed for about 2 hours and voila! Welcome baby Beckett! While we have no other experience to compare to, we fell this was the way to go. We found it to be great bonding for us, as we were able to work together to bring this beautiful life into the world.
Courtney and Beckett have been doing very well. From the start, Courtney has found this to be a much better recovery than what she had heard of experiences from friends and family. And Beckett has been nothing short of a total stud.
The timing of our delivery was beyond perfect! Courtney's dad was able to come in town last minute, but we weren't sure if he was going to be here for the delivery. His flight left about 8 hours after Beckett was born. And Beckett was born 6 hours before we were scheduled to be induced! So everything really was perfect. We even got to spend a few days with "Dazzle and Grammy" (Hamilton grandparents) before Beckett joined us. About 36 hours before delivery we were at the Blue Angels air show in HOT Idaho weather for 5 hours which included a 2 mile walk back to the car!
